The William Morris Room at the V&A

This is the room that inspired Peter Hare more than any other.

“During an exhibition in East London I was drawn to a book containing photographs of ornate and decorative rooms. A chap standing close by informed me that the book was a 100-year celebration of the projects of the renowned church and palace decorators Campbell Smith & Co”.

“Within weeks I left my white collar job and fought mightily to get a position with them”

"A year later as a late entry apprentice with CS&Co, I met Paul Humphreys in this room, the Green Dining room. We walked the galleries of the V&A during breaks and reinstated the stencilling, gilding and ornamental works over the summer”

Now known as the "William Morris Room" it was in fact created with the assistance of Morris’s friends the architect Phillip Webb and the legendary Edward Burne-Jones. It was 1865/6 and early in the career of William Morris and the designs and style became inspirational for his future works. One hundred and ten years later the room would also change the lives of Peter Hare & Paul Humphreys..
