In 1772 the celebrated writer, Arthur Young, said of Spencer House:
‘I know not a more beautiful piece of architecture… All in richness, elegance, and taste, superior to any house I have seen’.
The restoration of Spencer House was the watershed project that led to the merger of Peter Hare and Paul Humphreys and a partnership that would last for over 30 years.
Under the guidance of Lord Rothschild, David Mlinaric and the interior design team of MHZ led the Spencer House team.
The great room at Spencer House had lost its grand marble fire surround, much of the architectural mouldings, its chandelier and furniture. When walking through the unkept rooms it became clear the property had kept its soul but had lost so much of its character. It was a grey and sombre experience, one instantly knew that we could create enormous impact once again. Together the restoration team embarked on a very difficult but hugely successful journey. It was a journey that would reestablish the house as one of the finest interiors in London and one one that would raise the profile of all those that dedicated their skills.
These were the days before the forensic approach of today was popular. Uncovering historic schemes followed by countless trials and samples were the manner of the work. Removing coverings as well as many layers of paint the remaining ornamentation was gradually revealed. No stone was left unturned in recreating the fine mouldings, chandeliers, marble fireplaces and fine furnishing. The rich Georgian polychromatic scheme was applied and embellished with 23.5c gold leaf and illuminated by the crimson damask silk.
